DJI’s New Mavic Mini Is a 249-Gram Ultralight Drone With a 30-Minute Flight Time, 2.7K Video & More

DJI Mavic Mini drone

To help you reach new heights and in order to make your drone flying smaller, lighter, safer, and better, DJI has just unveiled its newest, and lightest unit yet. The DJI Mavic Mini, announced this morning, is the company’s “Everyday FlyCam,” and weighs in at just 249 grams to give you the compactness and flight power you need.

“This is a huge step forward for DJI, and for drones in general,” Adam Lisberg, DJI’s Corporate Communication Director, North America, tells Adorama. “We’ve taken all the features that you’ve seen in the Phantom family and in the Mavic family… and put them into our  smallest Mavic ever.”

The company presented the drone earlier this week at a media event in Brooklyn, New York, and showcased its most notable feature: the incredible light weight. The Mavic Mini’s takeoff weight of 249 grams (roughly the weight of five golf balls) puts it in the lowest and safest weight class of drones, which means it’s exempt from certain regulations in many countries. In the United States and Canada, the company notes, that means users do not have to register their Mavic Mini drone with the government. Of course, regular flight regulations and safety rules always apply.

Key Features:

  • 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor
  • 12MP resolution photo
  • 2.7K max video resolution
  • 3-axis gimbal
  • Weighs 249g (smaller than Mavic Air when folded)
  • 360-degree propeller guard
  • Low noise propeller
  • 30-minute flight time
  • Downward sensing for stable hovering
  • Intelligent modes: QuickShots, CineSmooth Mode, RTH, Water detection, Interval
  • Light, foldable remote controller
  • USB port for attaching devices

To keep the drone safety at the forefront, DJI has also added a 360-degree propeller guard that keeps the drone’s propellers protected. Plus, with the added downward vision sensing built-in, the drone is able to hover on its own, whether you’re flying indoors or out.

When it comes to content creation, the Mavic Mini’s stabilized gimbal camera can create 12MP stills and 2.7K Quad HD videos. You can power the entire unit using the dedicated remote controller that will let you view a live video feed for up to a 4km flight.

DJI Mavic Mini drone

The Mavic Mini’s flight time — up to 30 minutes on a fully-charged battery — means it can stay in-flight longer than many other lightweight drones, so you can create for extended periods of time.

To help with creating your images, DJI has also simplified recording and editing with the addition of QuickShots and CineSmooth mode, and by using the DJI Fly app, users can also take advantage of SkyPanel to share their aerial work and learn more about the popular flight locations in the area.

Compare

One of the most highly anticipated features of TrueCheck is the comparison option. Easily compare files, folders and volumes for sameness and differences based on user specified settings. Locate files with in a folder or volume easily.

Working with a team? Compare two volumes together to ensure they are a mirror image of one another. Settings for these comparisons include; checksum, file name and size, as well as date created and modified. This is a game charger for file management and will save users hours of manual work.

Generate

Straight out of the ShotPut Pro features requests! At its core, ShotPut Pro is a copy utility (albeit with a bunch of cool and useful features!) so making a report without copying anything would go against the very nature of its purpose.

Insert TrueCheck: Generate multiple reports of ANY files, folder or volume without making a copy. Need a PDF report with thumbnails and metadata for every file on your drive? Imagine’s got you. MHL reports required for this project? No problem. CSV and TXT more your style? Ok! Need all four?? Heck yeah you can!

Not the way TrueCheck can. Set camera manufacturers and creation date range, with specific file type AND the name and size.

View

Checksums are a crucial part of data integrity. With the view feature, drop a file, folder or volume into TrueCheck and allow it to create and display the checksums for you! Multiple checksum options including xxHash-64, MD5 or SHA are available.

Verify

TrueCheck supports two different types of checksum verification files: an industry standard Media Hash List (MHL) and a simple text list of files and checksums. Verify the integrity of each with thumbnails! TrueCheck will compare the referenced checksums against those calculated for the files within the associated volume. Side note: there’s light and dark mode too!

TrueCheck File Analysis app is available now for direct download at www.imagineproducts.com. Perpetual licenses are $149 and come with a 12 month update plan. 45 and 15 day rental licenses are available for $50 and $25 each.

I’m a documentary cinematographer and producer. Due to the nature of this project I am unable to disclose my name and location to protect myself and other shareholders. As I write this, I’m on Central Mountain Time in the USA. But it still feels like East African Time. I just got back from a one month trip to two countries in the heart of Africa. I was doing deep fieldwork (literally) on the topic of rare earth mining. We started planning this trip two years ago. My cinematographer and I were initially shooting in Burundi. Due to a series of miscommunication, setbacks with filming locations and health problems, I traveled by myself to Uganda.

My main shooting location was a sprawling ‘artisanal’ mine. Here laborers use hand tools to extract minerals that actually end up in the device that you’re reading this on. Just getting to this mine requires a 1.5 hour ride in a 4×4 vehicle. The trek careens through deeply agricultural hillsides and over swamps to reach an unassuming armed checkpoint with smiling guards.

This type of shoot is high stress and low budget. The preparation was intense. Each piece of camera and sound gear was carefully considered and chosen according to ergonomics and weight. This line of thinking also extended to our hard drives and computers.

After each day of shooting at the mine – sometimes 30-40 meters underground – I was exhausted. I returned to my hotel room to clean my equipment and transfer four QXD cards (128gb each) to a Lacie Rugged portable and two Lacie d2 Professional drives. As my cinematographer friend was unable to make it to Uganda, I found myself with an underpowered 2013 MacBook Pro instead of his slim 2019 MacBook Pro with USB-C ports.

This is where ShotPut Pro saved me so much time.

Before using this software, I would just copy all the cards to one drive using Finder. Then copy again to my backup drives. This required praying that the original transfers were byte-for-byte. With ShotPut Pro, I was able to verify simultaneous transfers to two drives with zero doubt. Then I would copy the dailies to a 3rd backup while I ate dinner. Later I would send the clip reports to my co-producers overseas. I’m unsure who engineered the PDF reports feature, but they should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

I heard about ShotPut Pro from a fellow director of photography who works in commercial video. This project is an independent documentary that I’m shooting and directing, which I started researching for in 2016. It’s a co-production with some other producers, an NGO and a University. I often travel to shoot environmental documentaries and I always end up being the DIT/media manager at the end of the day.

As I am awaiting a tracking number for the third backup drive being shipped from Kampala, I’m realizing that I’ll never shoot without ShotPut Pro again. It’s a nominal investment that saves you time and reduces stress.

Additional Gear Used

Sony FS7 Mk2 camera shooting at 4K DCI, Sennheiser Microphones, Core Batteries, SmallHD monitors, Sony A7III b-camera, Sachtler tripods, Zihyun Crane Gimbal, Fujinon and Laowa.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM best Canon lens for video

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM ($1699)

The 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens from Canon is the upgraded version of one of their most popular and versatile lenses. What makes it special is its very useful zoom range, which is great for shooters who aren’t sure what to get or want to bring just one lens with them for standard shots.

Another thing to love is that it incorporates Canon’s coveted L-lens technology to ensure only gorgeous, professional-quality videos and photos. Furthermore, it features a close focusing distance and is quite portable for on-the-go filming. The lens has been updated to last you much longer, making it an even more worthwhile investment.

Key Specifications:

  • Full-Frame Wide-Angle to Standard Zoom Lens
  • Focal Length of 24-70mm
  • Aperture Range of f/2.8 – f/22
  • Ring-Type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) AF System

  • Weighs 805g (28.4 oz)

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM best Canon lens for video

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM ($1699)

If you’re a professional looking for Canon L lenses, this is another lens that you ought to include in your arsenal. Offering a normal wide perspective that’s very useful for filmmaking, the 35mm f/1.4L II prime has special Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics that work great in low-light situations and significantly reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations.

This lens is also designed specifically for higher-end cameras, so you’ll want to pair this one with your topnotch DSLR or mirrorless camera — preferably a Canon to ensure compatibility that helps bring out the best in both the camera and lens.

Key Specifications:
  • Full-Frame Standard Prime Lens
  • Fixed Focal Length of 35mm
  • Aperture Range of f/4 – f/22
  • Ring-Type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) AF System
  • 9 Rounded Diaphragm Blades
  • Weighs 760g (26.8 oz)Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM best Canon lens for video

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM ($2099)

The 70-200mm f/2.8L from Canon is also one of the brand’s most popular, high-end DSLR lenses. And if you’re going to be investing in this giant premium lens, we recommend both the second and third generation, which are actually identical in the overall lens design, internal build quality, and image stabilization system. The only real differences are the v3’s whiter paint, added Air Sphere Coating (ASC) for improved flare and ghosting control, fluorine coating, and minor typographical changes on the outside of the lens.

As for its actual video results, being able to shoot at telephoto zoom ranges with wide apertures up to f/2.8 is simply the best way to get in on the action while isolating your subjects.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM best Canon lens for video

Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM ($599)

Fortunately for beginners and aspiring videographers, Canon also makes more budget-friendly lenses that can give you great visual results. A great example is the 24-105mm STM lens, which is frequently used in videography for its versatile zoom range and portability. Furthermore, it is equipped with Canon’s very own image stabilization technology to allow low-light shooting and handheld photography.

The lens is optimized for continuous subject tracking and focusing, thanks to the built-in stepping motor (STM) autofocus system that supports the Movie Servo AF mode on select cameras. This offers convenience in focusing — you no longer have to do it on your own, especially when vlogging or filming scenes where you constantly have to change your views.

Key Specifications:
  • Full-Frame Wide-Angle to Medium Telephoto Lens
  • Focal Length of 24-105mm
  • Aperture Range of f/3.5 – f/32
  • Stepping Motor (STM) AF Systems
  • Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) Technology
  • 7 Rounded Diaphragm Blades
  • Weighs 525g (18.52 oz)
Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM best Canon lens for video

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM ($179)

Prime lenses, in general, are hot purchases. Not only are they affordable, but they are very compact, lightweight, easy to store, easy to use, ultra-sharp, and equipped with bright apertures. If zooming is not a requirement for you, then the 40mm f/2.8 STM “pancake lens” is definitely worth checking out.

As a bonus, it’s an EF-mount lens, which means you can use it on crop sensor cameras and mirrorless cameras with the right adaptor rings. However, as with the previous lens on this list, it can only fully utilize the stepping motor (STM) and Movie Servo AF technologies when mounted on select cameras like the 5D Mark IV7D Mark II80D, and the EOS R mirrorless.

Key Specifications:
  • Full-Frame Standard Prime Lens
  • Fixed Focal Length of 40mm
  • Aperture Range of f/2.8 – f/22
  • Stepping Motor (STM) AF System
  • 7 Rounded Diaphragm Blades
  • Weighs 130g (4.6 oz)

Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L USM best Canon lens for video

Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L USM ($1249)

For those who are looking to shoot creatively, the Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L USM could very well be what you’re looking for. It’s a fisheye lens that offers an ultra-wide perspective at 8mm and a less distorted yet intense wide-angle view at 15mm. It can be useful for real estate videography and other video styles that need a crazy cinematic perspective.

Of course, that telltale red line on the lens is another sign that it’s designed to produce highly professional results, with the help of the brand’s L-lens optical technology. Did we mention it’s the world’s widest fisheye zoom lens? So if you want ultra-sharp stills or GoPro-like footage for your unique storylines and real estate videos, try this one out.

Key Specifications:
  • Full-Frame Ultra Wide-Angle Fisheye Zoom Lens
  • Focal Length of 8-15mm
  • Aperture Range of f/4 – f/22
  • Ring-Type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) AF System
  • 7 Rounded Diaphragm Blades
  • Weighs 540g (19.047 oz)

The Best AV Streaming Mixers & Video Encoders for a Multi-Camera Live Stream

video camera providing live event coverage

Streaming live and on-demand content has become the norm with the advent of services like Facebook Live, YouTube Live, Periscope, Twitch, and even podcasting. Countless content creators and brands have used these live streaming services to broadcast events to their audiences in real-time.

In this digital age, people prefer to consume visual content. Moreover, faster Internet speeds and mobile devices have made it easier for users to scroll through their newsfeeds to watch videos.

Whether you’re a videographer, content creator, or broadcast professional, it pays to connect with your audience via real-time online streaming.

Advantages of Live Streaming Content

Wider Audience Potential

Events are limited to their location and size. Live streaming, on the other hand, makes your content more accessible to people unable to attend your event. Through live streaming, you can reach anyone in the world and provide real-time coverage.

Reach Targeted Niches

When you live stream to your customers, they’re consuming the content on your time. This means that you’re only engaging with highly targeted niches who know and care about your brand. In return, they’re more likely to convert and follow through with a purchase.

Real-time Engagement

Live streaming paves the way to real-time engagement and direct interaction with users. More than just listening, viewers can participate in the event through live Q&As and interactive venue tours.

Repurpose Your Content

Making a live video takes less time to produce than other forms of content, like a blog post or a vlog. All you have to do is sit down with a video cam and press record. And you can even repurpose the finished product, whether its a published transcript on your blog or an infographic. Reuse your content and broaden your message further.

The Best AV Streaming Mixers & Video Encoders for Live Streaming

For streaming events in larger venues, you’ll need more pieces of video production equipment to help you consolidate audio and video signals for online broadcasting. A multiple camera set-up, in particular, allows you to capture videos from different angles and create more engaging content.

Depending on the cameras you use, you’ll need a reliable video encoder or AV streaming mixer to encode your video and data into streamable content. Browse our list to find the right one for your multi-cam setup.

  • What is an update plan?
An update plan gives you access to all the updates in a 12 month period. It comes standard with any perpetual licenses purchased after October 29, 2018.
  • What if I bought my license before October 29, 2018?
No problem, you can purchase an Update Plan for each license that you own.
  • Do I have to buy an update plan?
Nope! A perpetual license means you always have access to the version that you purchased. If you don’t wish to move away from that version, we won’t force you to. You will stay on that version until you have a current update plan.
  • How is this different than the upgrades Imagine Products used to provide?
It’s very similar. The benefits of the new Update Plan mean that we can push out new features throughout the year vs every 18 – 24 months.
  • How do I purchase an update plan?
Update plans are purchased directly from the Licenses page in your account. Here are step by step instructions.
