24_speed-racer.jpgCan anyone decipher what Susan Sarandon is referring to in this question-and-answer at collider.com about her work on the forthcoming Speed Racer movie with the Wachowski brothers? She says the time commitment was longer than usual because of the way the film was being shot, and makes reference to “some new kind of film,” a cutting-edge camera, and a vaguely described “layering” process to emulate a cartoon look.

Speed Racer is reportedly shooting with Sony F23s — the first feature film to use that camera? — which could explain the author’s excitement over a “revolutionary” camera. Someone at the cinematography.com forums (scroll down to the sixth entry) thinks the Phantom HD high-speed camera is being employed, too. (Mitch Gross of Abel Cine Tech, who’s in a position to know, declined comment in that thread.) I’m curious what kind of visual treatment the Wachowskis might be cooking up that would take unique advantage of the F23 and/or the Phantom HD or, perhaps, some combination of the two.
