Scientists working in water just 100 miles southeast of New Orleans on June 18 captured this rare footage of a juvenile giant squid, 10 to 12 feet in length, approaching the “e-jelly,” a faux-jellyfish lure attached to a giant-squid-hunting camera system called the Medusa. It’s only the second time researchers have managed to get video of a living giant squid. They’re hoping Medusa, which is built without any of the bright lights usually incorporated in remotely operated vehicles, will get more glimpses in the months and years to come. More details here.
