For nearly a decade now, The Entertainment Industry Development Corp.
has issued permits for Los Angeles location shooting and, while the
data is only an indicator for the health of the production economy, it
tells some interesting stories. The production days enumerated by EIDC
are only location days and do not include shooting on stages or in
incorporated cities like Burbank, Glendale and others within LA.
The most dramatic story is that television programming has grown
steadily over the last nine years, doubling since 1994. "TV’s booming,"
says Kathleen Milnes, senior VP workforce and economic development at
EIDC. "There are just more outlets for original content- free cable
niche networks, pay cable and a handful of broadcast networks that are
very hungry for original product whether its scripted or unscripted."
