It was only a matter of time before one of the majors dipped their toe in the 4K water. Over at DVinfo.net, reports are that JVC showed a 4K camera and were displaying footage at InfoComm.

The camera concept is 3-cmos, with 3840×2048 per cmos (no pixel shifting), and each cmos is 29x15mm. They were showing a spec sheet that only made mention of 30P/PsF– but since the tech is cmos, 24p should be just a minor software change. Camera head is 22lbs, and the CCU (which wasn’t out on display) is 24lbs.

Details about whether JVC actually plans on bringing this prototype to market are sketchy at best but it is yet another sign that it is only a matter of time until 4K becomes common.

UPDATE: A JVC representative replied to my query with this:

At this time, JVC does not have plans to commercialize the 4K camera. They
are currently studying the technology and market.
