Northern Lights, which provides award-winning editorial and postproduction services to advertising, TV network, feature film and interactive clients, has launched an audio division. Noted Mixer/Sound Designer/Composer Ted Gannon has been brought on board and is launching into a commercial campaign for Centrum, episodic promos for USA Network's "Law & Order", and a game open for the NHL in conjunction with VFX & design company Mr. Wonderful.
"Our clients have been asking for audio services for some time now," says Mark Littman, Northern Lights Partner. "We felt it was the right time and right fit to do so with Ted. Similar to our philosophy with Mr. Wonderful, each additional aspect of a project that we can control allows us to add so much more overall value to the project as a whole."

"Our company is driven by the collaboration of creative people, and we wanted someone with the skills and background needed for our diversity of projects," adds David Gioiella, Northern Lights Partner. "We've been hearing about Ted for years, and feel he's a great match. By being selective with our talent and waiting for the right opportunities, we've been able to grow Northern Lights successfully into new areas, with each department – editing, graphics and visual effects, and audio – integrating with and enhancing the other."

Ted Gannon comes over to Northern Lights from Bionic Media where he put his mixing and sound design skills to good use on promos for Sci Fi, Comedy Central, USA Network, the various Nickelodeon networks (Nick at Nite, Nicktoons, etc.), Food Network, and History Channel. He wrote music for "Battlestar Galatica" promos for Sci Fi, as well as a new mini-series, "Tin Man," a re-working of the classic "Wizard of Oz" story starring Richard Dreyfuss, Zooey Deschanel and Alan Cummings. During this time, he also continued to score comedy films and independent features.

From the local New York music scene, where he played in punk rock, reggae and ska bands to a degree in Music at Bard College, music has always been a part of Gannon's life. After a post-graduation tour in Japan with his funk band, he began his professional career as an Engineer/Composer at GLC, a small recording and sound design studio, in the West Village. Clients included De La Soul, Prince Paul, Lenny Kravitz, and the Wu Tang Clan, as well as MTV and Nickelodeon where he did sound design and mixing for several TV series.

During his time at NYU grad school for Film Score Composition, Gannon studied with notable composers including Morton Sobotnik, Deniz Hughes, Sonny Kompanik and Mark Snow, to name a few. When his twins were born, he took a leave of absence – and has yet to find the time out of his busy schedule to finish!

At commercial post house Subvoyant, where he enjoyed a six-year tenure, Gannon handled music and sound design on notable TV and viral campaigns for AT&T, Nike, Panasonic, PUMA, and Reebok, and promos for HBO's "Angels in America." He also performed mixing, sound design and composition duties for the Animal Planet show "Whoa Sunday!" featuring comedian Mo Rocca.

"Northern Lights is ascendant and going places," remarks Gannon. "They consistently deliver great work. David and Mark were really interested in my take on music and sound rather than having a factory approach. I consider mixing, sound design and music as the same art so we were all on the same page. It's nice to come in and establish this kind of framework right off the bat."

The new audio room is equipped with ProTools, a Digidesign Command board, and a voiceover sound booth. Music composition will be done via the Apple Logic software.

"One of the great things about Northern Lights is their tight integration with Mr. Wonderful for design and graphics," concludes Gannon. "I'm really excited to work with them on the graphics, and give input in the early phases of a project. Music and sound are not just an after-thought now. Technologically, my studio is completely integrated with everyone else – but conceptually, we are all involved from the get-go. It's a refreshing way to approach our work."
