This tapeless recorder offers 4:2:2 recording and I-frame only modes

Convergent Design will soon release its new Flash XDR, a compact flash-based high-definition Xstream data recorder for video production and display.
Priced at under $5,000, the company said, the recorder offers excellent video and audio quality with high bit rates, 4:2:2 recording, and I-frame-only modes. Including four compact flash slots, the unit features an aluminum enclosure with rubberized protective jacket for greater shock and vibration resistance. Card levels will be displayed on the LCD screen and metadata will be supported in XML file format. There will be direct transfer of MXF data files into NLE compatible formats.

There will be battery mount options for IDX and Anton Bauer batteries, and the company will add various tie-down points, including possible foldable “D” rings. There will be microphone and line-level inputs with phantom power.

The recorder will be camcorder-mountable, with specific mounting options for the Canon XL H1 and G1 as well as Sony XDCAM EX. Other models will follow.

There will also be six programmable function keys, including the ability to mark each “take” as good, better, or best. Sixteen user profiles (video/audio setups, metadata) are enclosed, which can be defined using a PC/Mac application and uploaded to Flash XDR via a CF card. Status LEDs (video, audio, time code and media) on the front panel will provide quick indications of valid inputs.

The keyboard can be locked during record sessions, with the option to unlock audio level adjustments. Pressing the “play” button after a record session will automatically play back the last take. And users have the option to define which files to play back.

The company said it expects to soon post online comparison video files (1080i59.94 at 25, 50, 100 and 160 Mbps). Deliveries are expected in the first quarter of 2008.
