As a bit of a follow up to an earlier post about the Mac OS x 10.5.6 update, it’s always best to proceed with a bit of caution with Quicktime updates as well. Apple seems to push these things out on a very regular basis since they are a music and media company these days and Quicktime is pretty much at the base if iTunes … or it seems to be as I am always presented with a update alert when opening iTunes before anything else. Today I saw that there had been an update from a blog post by Jon over at Digital Rebellion. There doesn’t seem to be much discussion of the new Quicktime on the forums as of yet but someone will install it and someone will post about it so keep an eye open around the ‘net and you might see problems from someone who has taken the plunge.

But now the real question is … when Apple releases the next generation of OS X, Snow Leopard,  we will be getting something called Quicktime X. From the Apple site:

Using media technology pioneered in OS X iPhone, Snow Leopard introduces QuickTime X, a streamlined, next-generation platform that advances modern media and Internet standards. QuickTime X features optimized support for modern codecs and more efficient media playback, making it ideal for any application that needs to play media content.

What does this mean for professional applications like Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer that are all about media playback? I sure don’t know so I guess only time will tell.
