In a parallel universe, kaboom-directing duo Sausage is also part of
the indie rock band Recliner, which can honestly stake a claim with the
clichà© "big in Japan" and has a devoted following Stateside. As
directors in the commercial advertising realm, it probably comes as no
surprise that Sausage is responsible for creating the Recliner music
videos.

This is, they note, a truly DIY effort – from the music to the label
and the videos – and one that has yielded great results. The first
Sausage-helmed video for Recliner's "All Pleasure" single was an
audience favorite on Fuse TV's Oven Fresh, and "Making a Friend" was
featured on RollingStone.com.
"We don't have to answer to anyone but ourselves since we are the label
and part of the band, so we can just have fun creating our low budget
music-driven films," says Sausage. "We can forgo the typical band
performance footage, for example, and just focus on narrative and
entertainment value."
Sausage's new video, "Float Away" is a hilarious tale of criminal
adventure that was created around found footage of a police and car
chase. Using an actress they had collaborated with on a commercial
viral project, Sausage created a story centered on a female crime
leader who pilots a getaway van post heist. The band, as hapless
criminals, is tossed around the vehicle like the woman's lackeys.
The video was shot on 24p, color corrected with AfterEffects (the chase
scenes treated to match the directed segments) and edited by Filmcore's
Connor McDonald.
"We learned some interesting things on this shoot, including the fact
that plastic animal masks are hard to see through when you are
sprinting down the street and that you can still get injured in a
padded van," they note, laughing.
On a serious and exciting note, the Recliner song "Leaving Hollywood"
will be one of 10 free songs available on the Sandisk MP3 player, and
other songs have been licensed to ESPN's videogames 2K5 and 2K6.
The directors have also recently been approached by other bands that,
having seen Recliner's videos, are interested in having Sausage create
their video calling cards.
"Having worked as agency creatives, commercial directors and being
members of a band, gives us the unique perspective of both what the
client – in this case a label – might want, with a feel for what will
ring true for the artist," concludes Sausage. "We hope to expand our
repertoire to include shooting music videos for other bands in many
genres."
