SpeedGrade DDS Fills Key Gap in Filmmaking Pipeline

ARRI is proud to preview a new option for the
ARRISCAN, the Digital Dailies Production Package. In support of an efficient
data-centric, tapeless workflow, the ARRISCAN team collaborated with IRIDAS
to help develop SpeedGrade DDS, a digital dailies and color correction
system. The new application will be included in the new Digital Dailies
Production Package from ARRI.
SpeedGrade DDS fills a key gap in film-based and digital filmmaking
pipelines. It is optimized for typical digital dailies workflows, where data
logging function and quick turnaround times for grading are essential. In
contrast to digital intermediate (DI) grading solutions, SpeedGrade DDS
works on scanned film reels directly without the need to build a timeline.

Takes can be detected automatically, using metadata provided by the ARRISCAN
– or with SpeedGrade's real-time scene detection. The application supports
data logging for both sound and reel/take information. Advanced sound
logging tools include automatic slate detection and stereo down-mixing of
multiple sound channels.

SpeedGrade DDS stores all grading information non-destructively as metadata,
which can be reused in the final DI. Output options include real-time play
out to tape as well as rendering to frame sequences and movie file format,
including burn-ins and timecode.

"ARRI was tremendously helpful in outlining the requirements for this new
application," said Lin Kayser, CEO of IRIDAS. "The result is a lean but
powerful dailies system which will allow facilities using the ARRISCAN to
manage their data quickly and efficiently."

SpeedGrade DDS supports ARRISCAN's flash frame detection for automatic take
assignment and displays the ARRISCAN defect map as overlay allowing users to
quickly identify issues stemming from their source material.

Launched in 2004, the ARRISCAN is now deployed at more than 50 facilities
worldwide such as: Weta Digital, New Zealand; EFILM Hollywood, Co3 Santa
Monica, Co3 New York, USA; Imagefilm, Spain; Mikros Image, France; MosFilm,
Russia; Tokyo Lab, Japan; Shortcut, Sweden and Drylab, Norway.
