AJA Io HD is a great 10-bit capture and up/down/cross conversion box if you want to work with ProRes422 native files in Final Cut Pro. But if you want to ingest and playback other native formats, such as XDCAM or P2, you have to spend time up front converting your files. The Io HD also leaves Mac-based Premiere Pro CS3 editors out of the loop. Matrox is stepping in with the MXO2, a “codec-agnostic” 10-bit I/O box that supports all flavors of XDCAM and P2 and works with FCP and Premiere Pro. Actually, “box” isn’t the right word. This piece of hardware is thin enough (and light enough) to slip into your laptop bag. No kidding. I took a look at an early model on Wednesday during NAB and was surprised at how lightweight the MXO2 actually is. Inputs and outputs include HD/SD SDI, HD/SD analog component, Y/C and composite, as well as HDMI I/O and monitoring. You also get eight channels of audio with surround sound monitoring, RS-422 control, genlock and the option to plug it in via the AC adapter or run it off a field battery. Matrox expects to ship these little wonders in July for $1,595.
