Holophone, the manufacturer known for surround microphones that resemble invaders from outer space, will introduce a new, more affordable model at NAB. It’s targeted to HD video professionals who will use them with camcorders in the field to capture a complete 5.1 audio track with a single microphone.
In NAB booth #N3931, the Canadian company will demonstrate the H3-D Microphone, a new design based on its existing flagship 7.1-channel H2-PRO model ($6,000). Fortunately, it’s far more affordable at $1,695.
The H3-D is a portable 5.1 multi-channel professional surround sound microphone targeted for HDTV, broadcast, recording, and studio applications. The idea is to use a single microphone to eliminate the need for complex, expensive, and time-consuming multiple-microphone surround set-ups.
Holophone said the new H3-D is a six-channel discrete microphone manufactured to automatically deliver 5.1 channels with no external mixing or signal manipulation needed.
Holophone mics work with any recording device, and are compatible with all audio mixing, encoding, and playback systems. They can also be used to enhance both mono and stereo mixes.
The H3-D features a multi-directional pickup pattern with 20Hz-20KHz frequency response on five perimeter channels and a discrete LFE microphone located inside. The microphone is phantom powered with an LED indicator.
Attached to the H3-D is a 15 ft. Monster cable that terminates in a 6-pin Neutrik XLR connector. A windscreen and pistol grip are optional accessories.
The company's mics can also be rented, and have been tested at numerous national and international broadcasts, including the Grammy Awards and the Super Bowl.
