Akitio announced the Thunder3 PCIe Box, a new Thunderbolt 3 expansion chassis for Windows PCs set to ship later this month.

akitio-backThe single 1×16 PCIe slot provides up to 25 watts of power to an expansion card, and the box has two Thunderbolt 3 ports to support daisy-chaining or to drive a second monitor.

Akitio suggested an editing environment that would allow NLE users to connect two 4K displays to their systems or to hook up other Thunderbolt 3 storage options, including PCIe SSD storage.

But don't get any big ideas about hooking up workstation graphics cards to your MacBook — graphics cards are not supported by the device, and neither the Mac OS nor a Boot Camp environment is supported at all.

Expansion cards that it can support include video cards like the AJA Kona LHi/LHe Plus capture cards, Red Rocket-X, fibre-channel and Ethernet adapters, and various storage solutions. Akitio maintains a card compatibility chart at its website.

The Thunder3 PCIe Box is expected to ship this month with an MSRP of $300 and a 0.5m Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable included in the box.
