The colors, man. Company 3’s Dave Hussey does what he does best punching up the colors in telecine to create a warm, whimsical look. Director Chris Milk actually shot the 35mm video in Romania and used a real sunflower farm instead of creating the field through visual effects. "Romania offered both the striking sunflower fields I was looking for and a very desirable exchange rate for production," says Milk.
"We didn’t just want the whole video to look the same," says Hussey. "In telecine, Chris likes to explore all of his options."
1. Hussey: Here, we used a red polarizer to enhance the flowers.
2. Hussey: Chris is not the kind of director that has five videos going on at the same time. When he is working on a video he is focused on that alone. We may spend hours color correcting, but if we find something better on the last take we start again.
Milk: It’s a common misconception that there is a lot of effects work going on to change the size of the "mancrow." But there is never a tiny birdman and large boy in the same frame. Any size changes felt are done through editing.
3. Hussey: Chris Milk, [cinematographer] Danny Hiele and I decided to transfer from a low contrast print. We felt it would give us a rich, highly saturated element that would still have cinematic appeal.
4. Hussey: In the bird-landing scene, Chris used a 2×4 to flatten the flowers so that the field looked like the bird had crash landed there.
5. Hussey: A yellow polarizer was used to enhance the field and the sky.
Chris tried to shoot in early morning and late afternoon so that the light was softer and more diffused. This gave it more of a magical quality that he wanted.
In telecine, since we were dealing with different light during different parts of the day, we decided to optimize each situation instead of matching everything.
