Company Claims a 60 Percent Speed Increase over Competing Systems

Fans of super-slow-motion photography rejoice! Vision Research has announced two new Phantom high-speed cameras that it claims are the world's fastest 1-megapixel digital cameras. The new Phantom v1610 can capture video at a resolution of 1280×800 at more than 16,000 frames per second. If you're willing to knock down the resolution, the camera is purported to run at up to 1 million fps.
The Phantom v1210, by contrast, will only run at a comparatively paltry – but still quite speedy – 12,000 fps.

The company said the new cameras are based on proprietary sensors that use larger, 28-micron pixels to gether more light, an important consideration for cameras that are snapping pictures in mere ten-thousandths of a second.

The v1210 can have as much as 48 GB of memory onboard via the CineMag interface, while the v1610 can have up to 96 GB, allowing multiple shots to be taken back to back without the need to offload the footage over Ethernet cables before continuing.
