The Emmys were an upset this year. Netflix led the field with no fewer than 112 nominations, edging out HBO’s count of 108. That might not sound like a huge lead, but consider that HBO had been the most Emmy-nominated network for 17 straight years — and that, before the eligibility of House of Cards in 2013, Netflix had not earned an Emmy nomination at all.

Following Netflix and HBO was NBC, claiming distant third place with 78 nominations. Rival streaming services Hulu and Amazon came in at seventh and eight, with 27 and 22 nominations, respectively.

But there are lots of familiar faces among the nominees. HBO’s Game of Thrones, for instance, returned to its most-lauded status after a year of non-eligibility with 22 nominations, followed closely by a tie between NBC’s Saturday Night Live and HBO’s Westworld, each with 21. Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale was just a hair behind with 20.

Netflix got the most accolades for The Crown, which earned 13 nominations, followed by Godless and Stranger Things at 12 each.

The changing of the guard at the top of the Emmys heap comes at a critical time for HBO, as its new bosses at AT&T are said to be angling to dramatically increase the amount of programming it produces — in other words, while Netflix has spent the last few years striving to be more like HBO, it looks like HBO might be about to embark on a quest to become more like Netflix.
