P+S Technik's New Converter Puts 35mm Lenses on HDV Camcorders

While the current generation of small-format HD camcorders offers remarkable image quality, most are not designed to provide the precise controls required by discerning videographers. P+S Technik, a Munich-based company founded in 1990 by a group of former ARRI engineers, is helping to change that.
The company’s Mini35 Image Converter, enhanced since its initial introduction in 2000, allows the use of 35mm film lenses and control accessories on today’s HDV and MiniDV format camcorders. The converter makes depth of field, focus, and angle of view nearly identical to that of a 35mm film camera.

Optimized for 1/3-inch CCD imagers, the Mini 35 converter has interchangeable mounts available for shooting with Arri PL, Nikon, Panavision, Leica, Zeiss-Contax or Canon EF 35mm lenses. Industry-standard 15mm lightweight support rods accommodate popular matte boxes, follow-focus units, and other pro-level motion-picture camera accessories.

For those using multiple camcorders, the basic converter can be fitted to Sony, Canon and Panasonic camcorders using the appropriate connecting kit. Beyond these camera-specific kits, the system has also spawned some useful accessories.

One is a breakout box that provides video outputs for a viewfinder and additional monitoring. From here power is distributed to the image converter, camera, and various accessories. By using a professional battery system, videographers can extend operating time. A three-axis professional viewfinder holder is also offered to aid handheld and shoulder shots.

To simplify the purchase of a Mini35 package, P+S Technik offers a downloadable configuration tool that helps potential users assemble the correct parts for their specific camcorder model and lenses. It can be found at: www.pstechnik.de/en/digitalfilm-mini35.php.

Currently there are configuration kits available for the following camcorders: Canon XL H1, XH A1/G1, XL2, XL1; JVC GY-HD100, 200, 250; Panasonic AG-HVX200, AG-DVX100; and Sony HVR-V1,HVR-Z1, HDR-FX1, PD150, PD170, VX2000.
