Press Release

Outside Editorial, the SOHO-based editorial and design boutique has
expanded its services into the high-end visual effects arena with the
signing of award-winning Inferno/Flame artist, Steve Mottershead.
Sila Soyer, executive producer for Outside Editorial, noted, “The
addition of Steve to our staff is very exciting. His skills as a
top-caliber visual FX artist are an ideal complement to our editorial
and graphic design services, adding a new dimension to our company’s
reputation as a full-service, world-class resource for effects-driven
commercials. At the same time, we’ve created a richer collaborative
environment that will benefit all of our work.”
Mottershead just completed his first project since joining Outside
Editorial’s team – a challenging cross-platform campaign for 2007
Jaguar XK entitled “Gorgeous” that called for him to perform extensive
color correction and image manipulation. Mottershead did the final
color correction right in Outside’s Flame suite. His technical skills
and commitment to pushing the envelope kept creative options open
through the final phase of postproduction.
Early in his career Mottershead established a reputation as a high-end
visual problem-solver with the ability to conceive and execute
sophisticated visual effects for commercial projects. Hailing from
Canada, he spent the past five-years at Axis, one of Toronto’s top
visual FX houses, as Inferno/Flame artist, online editor, compositor
and VFX Supervisor. While on their staff, he worked on numerous high
profile, effects-driven spots for such clients as Coca-Cola, Nike,
Microsoft Xbox, Anheuser Busch, Lexus, Pepsi, Budlight/Super Bowl,
FedEx and Adidas.
Directing a steady stream of music videos brings a fresh perspective to
Mottershead’s spot work. An ongoing freelance relationship with Blink
Pictures/Toronto has given him the opportunity to direct a long roster
of music videos, including “Bad Trip” (Breach of Trust), “Saturday
Night” (Jersey), and “All My Real Friends” (High Holy Days).
In 1998, after earning a degree in Media Arts/Film from Sheridan
College, and a fine arts degree from McMaster University, Steve
launched his own company, Rodeo Digital. The Toronto-based corporate
video boutique’s client-base soon began to attract more challenging
commercial work, ultimately leading him to his current career path.
An accomplished Flame Artist/Designer and music video director,
Mottershead has garnered numerous awards and accolades, including the
Much Music ‘Best Postproduction Award’, a nomination for the Juno
Award’s ‘Best Music Video’, and Sheridan College’s “Best Visual Effects
Award.”
Steve Mottershead joins a collaborative mix of talent, which includes
senior graphics designer Jaime Lamond, graphics designer Riccardo
Sinti, senior editor and Outside’s founder, Scott Gaillard, and editors
Scott Gibney, Steve Evans and Jeff Ferruzzo. Two Flames, Smoke, 5D
Cyborg and 4 Macintosh design stations put cutting-edge technology at
the fingertips of Outside’s designers and artists, while the editorial
team works on an Avid Meridien-based editorial systems with Unity
MediaNetwork
Outside’s 4000 square foot duplex provides a stunning, loft-like
creative environment with over-the-top client amenities ‘ however, it’s
their talent’s creativity and their seamless use of technical firepower
that’s drawing the crowd.
“Clients appreciate knowing that one company has a tight reign on their
project as it progresses through each phase of the editorial, design
and visual effects process. But they also want to be sure that they’re
getting the best creative in each area. With the addition of Steve, and
our newly launched visual effects services, we can offer them just
that.”
Mottershead noted, "After meeting with the staff at Outside my decision
to relocate and begin a new chapter of my life, here in New York, was
very easy. I’ve never met a group of people that work so well together.
The egos are put aside, and everyone one works in tandem to create
fantastic work. Scott Gaillard is very open to ideas and is a visionary
in his own right. He also makes sure that all of our equipment is at
the cutting edge of the latest technology, Scott isn't the type of
person that cuts corners. Outside is a very inspiring space to work and
the fact that our staff is relatively young and so tight knit, gives us
that creative, enthusiastic edge."
