The good folks over at MacVideo sat down with legendary editor Walter Murch and had a nice, long discussion for all to see. As editors we don’t listen to Murch only because he has edited such great films as Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, and Jarhead but because he is a technologist who isn’t afraid to jump in and work with new post-production technology. He became even more legendary from our software-centric standpoint when he literally wrote the book on using Final Cut Pro to edit a feature film, Behind the Seen: How Walter Murch Edited Cold Mountain Using Apple’s Final Cut Pro and What This Means for Cinema.

Of course everyone wanted to know what Murch thinks of Final Cut Pro X, and that’s one of the main topics of conversation in this three-part interview from MacVideo. I won’t give away all of what Walter’s thoughts are about FCPX but you can probably guess what he’s going to say. Like many he sees the positives but also all the negatives. Maybe a future version of FCPX will deliver what he needs for a feature. Somehow it’s hard to imagine what a feature film FCPX “project” might be like when a timeline is a project and a single film might have tens of hundreds of different versions of a cut. I guess I just did give away what his thoughts are. Regardless, if you’ve got an hour to kill—and maybe you do tomorrow, post-feast—these interviews are an interesting listen.
