Rushes created a slick, new commercial for Heineken, adopting a
metamorphosis scene from the cult movie, Terminator
2
.

To help Heineken launch their new design and size of bottle, Grey
Poland wanted a film in which the “old” bottle undergoes a
metamorphosis into the updated design. Rushes undertook both the live
action shoot; utilising its own motion control studio in Wardour St and
the post-production in order to have maximum input and involvement with
the project.
Jonathan Privett, CG Supervisor at Rushes, explains, “Initially an
animatic of the 20-second spot was created to test the timings and
camera work for both live action and 3D portions. Once the
pre-visualisation was complete the shoot took place giving the open for
the film in which the old bottle is frozen by combining beauty, smoke
and frosted passes in Inferno.
“The frozen bottle then shatters dramatically in slow motion, an effect
achieved by using Maya’s dynamics in combination with Pixar’s Renderman
for shading the solid glass chunks. Rushes 3D artists then decided to
use Next Limit Technologies “Real Flow” software for the melting and
recombination of the glass that follows the slow motion shatter effect.
Although “Real Flow” gives a superb looking end result it’s really
designed for faster moving liquid applications and the team battled
very large simulation times of up to 10 hours per iteration to complete
the 3 liquid recombination shots. Finally multiple passes, including
beauty, highlight, shadow, refraction and caustic were combined in
Inferno for the finished film.”
Matt Jackson, the VFX Shoot Supervisor, adds, “We filmed multiple
motion passes of the bottle at our motion control studio and it was
essential to ensure the CG plate elements were useable, and we had all
the reference possible.”
