An early look at the AJA Io HD

Apple’s hardware box for their ProRes422 codec, the AJA I0 HD was announced to much fanfare at NAB this year. The unit has yet to ship but HD for Indies has an unofficial first look at a unit with a lot of specs on what it can and can’t do. As has been and will be mentioned, the AJA Io HD will go head-to-head with Avid’s Adrenaline hardware line. Mike at HD for Indies makes some good comments comparing the two units. One more great thing the Io HD has over an Adrenaline system is that of portability. They even built a handle in the Io! io_handle.png It’s clear AJA is aiming the marketing of the Io with an eye towards portability as some of the pictures I have seen uses a laptop as the host computer. Avid has done the same with the Mojo device but it won’t do anywhere near as much as the Io will. It’s a totally different kind of device. What I really want to see? A head-to-head smack down between all the above mentioned products and the MOTU V3HD!

First off, thanks very much for the link luv, much appreciated.

I too am curious to lay mitts on a MOTU V3HD, they are indeed shipping, I saw a demo unit sitting on the counter at Tekserve in NYC when I was up there the other week.

I posted an initial comparison of the originally published specs here:

    ….if anyone is interested.

BUT…that was just specs, not hands on, real world operation.

I look forward to working with both units, I think they both will have their niches.

Thanks for putting that link in the comments Mike. It’s nice to see those specs side by side. If you can get your hands on both in the future and do a “smackdown” then you’ll gets lots of link luv as that will be a great comparison and I’m sure you’d smack ‘em down right!

Please! Do a HEAD to HEAD? on the said Motu V3HD vs. the Aja IO HD, doing one against the Avid, who by the way seems like they are a dying breed, this is just political in nature, and AJA has a deal with APPLE, and MOTU, doesn’t?

I would think it unethical not to show the fair market, and cut the sugar coating and show a real comparison, instead of one that is obviously political.

Or are we going to start comparing say, the AJA io HD, with a flatbed? would have been the same thing…
the Avid days of making their customers obsolete are numbered…

I think Aja, is only in cahoots with APPLE, as once MATROX was, it is too funny that the RTmac was on the APPLE site, but then was taken off after a dispute?
Suddenly, Matrox was not kosher, I wonder if Aja, could ever get ‘out of style’?

MOTU, has a great track record, to deny them a fair review is just an obvious show of unethical press tactics.

Especially, since the MOTU can go head to head not only with the AJA gear, but also with PROTOOLS(AVID)

so is this losing 2 advertisers? yikes….

Just do the HEAD to HEAD so we can be fair?
doing it against AVID is like comparing a Black and White TV with the new color televisions of the day.

    lets be real?

    Thanks

ps- keep up the great work, I love these mags, and the sites…..they are more helpful, I think than many of the other mags, trades…that are getting thinner and thinner.

Sing; I’m not sure I understand your comment…. so are you saying a head to head is a good thing or a waste of time? You can say Avid is a dying breed but they still sell a lot of units. There can be many comparisons with Avid included since all of these boxes start with the software at the head. The IO HD and the Adrenaline are designed to do many of the same things (especially when an Adrenaline is outfitted with the DNxHD card) so a comparison would be very much in order. The MOTU seems to do many of the same things but with DVCPRO HD as it’s compressed HD flavor of choice.

And this comment: “so is this losing 2 advertisers? yikes….” might want to explain that one a bit too…. I don’t have anything to do with advertisers on this site, I just call ‘em as I see ‘em! Thanks for commenting.
