In a move that's been rumoured for months, Apple has apparently purchased the assets of Silicon Color, the San Diego-based company behind the FinalTouch line-up of color-finishing products for the Mac. Apple itself hasn't released any information on the purchase, but a headline at the top of the Silicon Color Web site home page broke the news yesterday.
Update: An Apple spokesperson confirms the news, describing the Silicon Color announcement as an "official statement."
The Silicon Color announcement read, in its entirety, "We are pleased to announce that all Silicon Color technology and intellectual property, including FinalTouch color-correction software, was recently sold to Apple. Maintenance agreements held by current Silicon Color customers will be honored by Apple until they expire.
Apple, which carved out a section of the video-editing market with its aggressive work on Final Cut Pro, may well add some version of FinalTouch to the line-up of production software that makes up its Final Cut Studio package, which currently includes Motion, Soundtrack Pro, and DVD Studio Pro.
Silicon Color makes three different products for working at three different resolutions: FinalTouch 2K ($24,995), FinalTouch HD ($4995), and FinalTouch SD. There's no word on how many members of Silicon Color's staff and management may be included in the move to Apple.
