For visual effects design heavyweight Grant Freckelton, who served as visual effects designer on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and as visual effects art director on The Matrix Reloaded, the chance to work on a test shoot led to his dream job as the VFX art director on 300, based on the Frank Miller graphic novel and directed by Zack Snyder. For starters, he is huge fan of Miller’s work. More importantly, however, the job gave him the opportunity to flex his creative muscles and help create a truly unique look for this feature film.

300 is everything and more that anyone could expect from a Frank Miller graphic novel. 300 - the film, takes the legacy beyond the reaches of mere mortals.

The lesson to be learned is that the hand-crafted and the computer generated reinforce each other beyond exponentially. It's not either-or, it's and-and to the nth power.
Pretty please with dollars on top, take a look at http://www.artrenewal.org and http://www.the forumgallery.com and play with what you see and find, especially as regards the digital equivalent of Payne's grey and Davy's grey and the technique of glazing: I am unflinchingly keeping the faith that through applying these techniques with digital methods, the viewers' perception of three dimensions can be simulated without silly glasses, lasers and using today's film/digital stock. That challenge is the Persian Army the 300 of computer animation can conquer with effort, to everyone's entertainment benefit (especially the distributors).

The blood that was created by Lobo (Brazil) was for an intrigating and strange brazilian movie called NINA. This movie has an animated comic book sequence to show violence, even before Kill Bill.

300 sets the standard for stylized movies.
If Sony is to bring God of War to the big screen in near future, I would have to say that fans will definately expect an epic and stylized film like this one.
Perhaps the scene with young Leonidas and
the wolf is a good example of what Kratos
and his world could look like.
Just an opinion.

That's all great (and I love the movie), but as a novice editor, can someone please tell me the best way to immitate the crush and colouring effect used in 300 - I've been googling and forum surfing for days now and can only really find tuts for Photoshop but need to apply the style to video footage. I'm using the adobe suite, so Premiere or After Effects would be great.... thanks.

I really love how 300 looks -it's a real piece of art on screen.
And I'm making this movie to which I wanted to add a 300-ish feel, so I came up with a pretty cool technique to recreate the "crush" in After Effects, and it's also pretty simple.
1) You take your footage and buff the contrast up with the Brightness and Contrast effect (I used 43,5, and the footage was shot in a very sunny day).
2) Then, you duplicate your footage, and delete the Brightness and Contrast thing. You then turn the transfer mode of this layer to "Color". It's starting to look a bit like it, isn't it?
3) Finally, you apply your favorite color correction control to the top layer (I used Color Balance), and bring up the yellows and the reds (not too much, yellow more than red), then check the Maintain Luminosity checkbox.
And then you're done. You can also forget about the yellows and reds and bring up the blues and cyans to make a more Wolf fight-like style.
