Creating 24's Mushroom Cloud

Post your comments below

The new season of Fox's perennial hit 24 got off to a running start this year, as a two-night, four-part season premiere culminated in a one-two punch — first, Jack was forced to kill one of his best friends in the Counter Terrorisum Unit (CTU) in the name of national security. Then, a nuclear warhead exploded in suburban Los Angeles.

Does the mushroom cloud form only when the blast occurs in the air, as was the case in most historical footage ?
Would a ground (or subway blast produce that shape ?
It seemed so odd to me as I watched the episode(s).

I have LOVED the storyline with24 since the first season. And the graphics are so great, they look like the real thing.

Actually most historical footage is of ground-based tests rather than air bursts, and mushroom clouds are easily formed by either (so long as the air burst isn't at an extremely high altitude; high altitude bursts are intended to create EMP effects rather than cause destruction on the ground.) What most DON'T know is any sufficiently powerful explosion will form a mushroom cloud; it need not be nuclear.

Wikipedia has a pretty good article on the subject here:

Look at the very first blast (Alamogordo, Trinity Site, July 16, 1945), the bomb was only a few hundred feet above ground on a tower; I assume you mean a bomb dropped from an aircraft, as w/Hiroshima?

btw, there's a typo in "The rolling effect of the mushroom cap"... The correct word is "roiling."

I think the stem looks too undefined. Maybe it would seem more realistic if I saw the video.

it's a suitcase bomb, not one that was shown in the desert years ago. This kind of bomb certainly won't have the same exact look as the older footage. No one on here has seen a suitcase bomb, neither have I, so with that, I think they did a good job interpreting what it would look like. A larger bomb would've looked different. A smaller bomb.. maybe TNT would've looked different too. Keep that in mind when talking about the explosion.
