Cinematographer Claudio Miranda has created memorable — and award-winning — images for big-name products and splashy music stars, from Missy Elliot to Xelebri, Backstreet Boys to Heineken. More recently, Miranda has turned his eye to long-form, as director of photography for A Thousand Roads (a special screening at 2005 Sundance Film Festival) and Failure to Launch. F&V caught up with Miranda as he wrapped up photography on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a David Fincher film starring Brad Pitt as a man who ages in reverse. Miranda talks about Fincher, the Viper workflow and digital dailies.

Nice article, but why don't you ask him where he got the equipment from?
Please let all of our fellow filmmakers know that The Camera House in North Hollywood, who also packaged David Finchers "Zodiak", is there source for this full package work flow.
Thanks,
Stu

Production Designer is Don Burt. Don Burgess is a DP.
Wayne Tidwell is a Data Capture Engineer. His job is to capture all the data. He does playback as well, but he is in charge of the digital negative.

Although any public exposure for a relatively new system is helpful, I’ve learned that the details within written interviews are often inaccurate due to time constraints, editorial decisions, or other motivating factors. Below is a clarification of the tasks performed by the Data Capture Engineer during production.
When shooting with a digital movie camera and recording to an S.two Digital Field Recorder (or similar disk-based capture system) the act of operating the recording system is the responsibility of the Data Capture Engineer (I.A.T.S.E. Local 695)
Among the tasks of the DCE is the assembly of the Data Capture system components, recording and management of the master footage of the project, management of the available recording space (digital magazines), the deletion of unwanted master footage at the director’s request, the installation and employ of lookup tables throughout the project, interaction with post production facilities, capturing a de facto backup of the full quality digital production audio tracks, assisting the director of photography in monitoring the light values via the Waveform monitors on the Data Capture work station, producing D.mag reports which replace traditional camera reports, and performing video assist-like functions including playback and providing the director’s viewing monitors.
Although video assist operators provide a very valuable function it is clear that the responsibilities involved in Data Capture are varied and many.

Very interesting article! Loved it! I was wondering: Is there already some footage or a few shots of the movie available, sort of as a tease for all the image-hungry and anticipating Benjamin Button fans ...? :-)

I would like to know more about the online review system Fincher uses. Is it simply an ftp site or is there some kind of review system.

I still find it interesting that in order to be "nimble on our (their) feet", they still shot film.
