Avid Shows New Thinking at Editors Lounge

Post your comments below

If you've been watching these AlphaDogs Editors' Lounge videos you know that these guys can be quite tough on manufacturers, and Avid in particular recently. Avid reps jumped into this fire to show their latest hardware (Nitris DX and Mojo DX) and software versions (Media Composer and Symphony 3) last month. The reaction, somehwhat surprisingly for this crowd, was overwhelming positive. They even cheered. So what has them excited about Avid's new releases?

Avid reps spoke about major advances, including performance improvements and the ability to mix formats in the timeline as well as select raster types, but they also showed off the smaller changes that will make editors' lives easier. And if you are patient, there's a few hints about Avid's future plans to deal with footage from the RED camera. Watch it all below.

Isn't this what final cut has done for like 3 years? So glad Avid joined the band wagon!

What new thinking? New Spin that's all.
What's still old? Avid hardware still only works with Avid software. Avid software still only works with Avid hardware. These are not the same thing. We can allow that Avid software should be tightly coupled with their hardware. But there is no technical reason why Avid can't create a quicktime based device driver to bridge their hardware to other applications. Even if it required a reboot or separate boot drive. What is the freakin' point of spending $10-$15K on a box that only works with one app?

Are you kidding me? This is "new?" I have been a FCP editor for three years now and am glad I made the switch. These is still nothing new here that FCP hasn't been doing. Too expensive, too behind the curve, too irrelevant. Bye, bye Avid... forever!

moving clips up and down tracks? inserting tracks? playing multiple streams? color indication of realtime playback ability? spinning beachballs? oh COME ON dude, this is so amazing to someone who hasn't used Final Cut...

Avid has been at AlphaDogs for quite some time, hardly following on FCPs coat tails. I'd love to see FCP actually handle 8 streams of HD in real-time, its never worked for me.

Vegas has had the ability to mix formats in the timeline for years...years before FCP (I use both) - and this is among many other things that FCP and Avid have been catching up on. Ken is right. Take a look at Sony (Sonic Foundry actually) Vegas. You will be surprised. Yeah, all of the programs have their shortcomings, but...

Whether FCP is great or not, IT WILL GO NOWHERE in multi-room shared environment facilities until Apple can actually deliver a shared server that WORKS! Two years after FCS and it's still vaporware.

Oh yes, and let's see FCP do in real time the level of color correction that's available in Symphony. Puh-leze.

About the right-click - I'm sure that Avid is aware with a 2-button mouse you can have right-click. What the presenter was commenting on was the fact that you can lean on the right side of the 1-button mouse and have right click - a new feature for Macs. I was surprised myself the first time I used it.

Hmmm.....not sure what the last comment means. Apple hardware DOES NOT ONLY WORK WITH APPLE SOFTWARE! As a matter of fact, Macs can run ANY software a PC can, PLUS running Mac software! So guess what? Macs have MORE choices for software than PC\\\\\\\'s now!
