The New Orleans Film Festival ongoing this week brought together a panel of filmmakers for the session “The Indie Filmmaker – A Survival Guide” to discuss the challenges and obstacles facing aspiring auteurs. Topics included common mistakes made in low-budget features, the importance of the script and how to trust feedback, what crew members should absolutely be paid, financing options, casting and how selling furniture may very well prepare you better to be a director than going to film school. Good stuff. Concur. I was at a AFI event years ago: the Director of Development for HBO told me if I didn't know what kind of perfume she wore and what kind of car she drove not to bother pitching her. I told her to kiss.......Thank goodness for the technical revolution. Do it yourself!

John Murphy has been a hero of mine for a year now. With this, he's an even bigger hero. Bravo, Mr. Murphy.

I'm a student of John Murphy's and everything he has taught to date is extremely helpful, this is an excellent addition to his teachings.

I finished my first feature about a year ago, after two years of working on it after hours. I worked my tail off, and as of yet have very little to show for it, but I'm proud of my film. I hope to make more. Thanks for sharing your insights, it is encouraging.
