Nice overview... except my mileage varied. When I used the best 90 minute setting on a 30 minute video and burned the DVD, it displayed artifacts on my living room DVD player. I set the maximum data rate to about 6.5 mbps (it had been 7.1 mbps) then the resultant DVD+R played just fine and I detected no reduction in the quality of the image.
I'd like to see more in-depth coverage of compression issues.

Robert, in the past I have experienced artifacts when playing a high-bitrate encoded DVD on some DVD players, most probably because they can't keep up with that bit rate (even though they are supposed to handle an 8Mbit stream of MPEG2). It also depends if you are using a constant or variable bit rate, but as you mentioned "maximum data rate" above, that leads me to think it's variable.
