A Stripped-Down Variation on Last Year's Popular NX1

Samsung announced the NX500, a new consumer-grade mirrorless camera with a 28Mpixel BSI APS-C sensor and high-resolution 4K (24 fps) and UltraHD (30 fps) video recording capability. The internal specs are close to those of Samsung's NX1, a mirrorless in a larger form factor released last year, but the NX500 has no viewfinder (only a three-inch touchscreen), no 4K out over HDMI, no external mic and headphone jacks, and no USB 3.0.

The camera records video clips to SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-I media using the HEVC codec to improve efficiency. That heavily compressed source won't offer the most latitude for video pros, but the NX500 will be one of the smallest 4K cameras on the market, and at $799 (including a 16–50mm f/3.5–5.6 kit lens) it will be one of the least expensive, too.

The Samsung NX500 is slated to ship in March.
