At NAB, Panasonic announced the AG-DVX200, a 4K handheld camcorder with a 4/3-inch sensor, two XLR audio inputs, and a fixed 13x optical zoom lens.

The camera shoots 4K at 60p (up to 120p in HD) and features a V-Log L gamma curve (think of it as V-Log Lite) that emulates the VariCam characteristics. At a price tag of less than $5,000, Panasonic hopes the DVX200, with its large sensor, will find a niche as an inexpensive counterpart to the VariCam 35. It's scheduled for release this fall.

Panasonic also announced a firmware upgrade for the Lumix GH4 that would enable anamorphic recording.

On display in Panasonic's booth was a "Panavised" version of the VariCam 35 (above), sporting the Panavision Hollywood Handle as well as custom cheeseplates and other attachments.

VariCam Product Manager Steve Cooperman said that a previously announced VariCam 35 firmware upgrade enabling additional recording formats (including  AVC-Intra Class 2K 4:4:4, AVC-Intra Class 200 (4:2:2), and more) and variable-frame-rate recording at up to 120fps was on schedule for release later in April.

Also coming soon, Cooperman said, is a 16-foot cable extension unit that would help make the VariCam 35's modular design more suitable for use on jibs, Steadicams, and gimbals such as those from MoVI. And word is the promised Codex V-Raw recorder is slated to arrive in June or July.
